This Irish melodrama is based on the tragic story of Ellen Hanley, whose murdered body was washed ashore at Moneypoint in Co. Clare and buried nearby in Burrane cemetery. Boucicault’s play has a much happier ending and in 1860’s The Colleen Bawn was an immediate success in London where it had the longest run in the history of the English stage – its 230 performances making it The Mousetrap of its day!
Ennis Players have been competing on the 1-Act and 3-Act festivals for many years and are delighted to bring this Irish classic on tour. Last year the group qualified for the All-Ireland final in Athlone with another classic: Brian Friel’s The Loves of Cass Maguire. The group was placed third at the All Ireland final in 2011 with The Playboy of the Western World by J.M Synge.
